Extract from article in Compleat Golfer Magazine, August 2007

by Dr Kapnias, a medical doctor in private practice for 15 years

Q: I suffer from arthritis and it really affects my golf. I see a lot of medical bracelets in the marketplace, do they help or is there a better solution?

Arthritis can be really debilitating for golfers and if one starts with symptoms it is best to tackle the problem head-on to prevent further joint damage. Dr Kapnias goes on to say that the problem can be treated in various ways depending on the kind of arthritis one may have, it is best to have a definitive diagnosis in order to prescribe an appropriate treatment. In his experience, some magnetic bracelets do work well and relieve pain and inflammation of joints. Other supplements that are really beneficial for arthritis are Omega 3 and Glucosamine. These two supplements do really work in protecting your joints and decreasing inflammation, and both are natural without any side effects.

Prevent cancer through nutrition (an extract from Health24)

Eighty percent of all cancers are due to identified factors, and therefore are potentially preventable, according to the National Cancer Institute. And 35 to 50 percent of cancers are linked to food.

Although no single food or nutrient can prevent cancer, nutrition can definitely reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. The survival rates of people who have cancer can also be improved.

Eat natural, wholegrain foods
" One should always choose foods that are as close to their natural state as possible", says Lauren Atkinson, Discovery's nutritionist.

Refined products, such as white rice, usually have had the nutritious part of the grain removed during processing. These products may be enriched, i.e. they have certain vitamins and minerals added back to them. While "enriched" may sound healthy, many valuable nutrients removed during the refining process are never added back.

In addition, many refined products add other ingredients that are not desirable, such as sugars, salt or fats. It is best to select whole wheat bread over refined flour breads, fresh fruits and vegetables over canned, whole grain cereals over cereals that are heavily sugared, brown rice over white rice and so forth.

Prevent cancer with fibre
Different types of fibre have different effects on the body, but they are generally classified into soluble and insoluble fibre. Both are very important. See Fabulous Fibre Regular, also search our site (below) on this keyword.

Overweight = increased risk
Higher body weight is harmful to the body in a variety of ways, for example increased risk of heart disease, but in women in particular, it also increases the risk of breast cancer after menopause.

The good news is that before menopause, weight does not increase risk, so if you are menopausal, there's still time to get your weight under control and reduce your risk.

Prevent cancer with exercise
Exercise helps the body to use food effectively. It also builds lean muscle and burns kilojoules. Even without weight loss, exercise is associated with a lower risk of colon and breast cancer.

Since exercise also speeds up transit time of food leaving the body, it may also reduce the risk of colon cancer. But make sure you consult your doctor before starting any exercise programme.

"To reduce your risk of any kind of cancer, a diet that is high in fibre, low in animal and trans-fat, and high in fruit and vegetables is the most powerful prescription," said Lauren Atkinson, Discovery's nutritionist. – (Health24)

Eating fish reduces the risk of dementia

An extract from the local newspaper (report from Chicago, U.S.A.) - Eating fish at least once a week slows the toll ageing takes on the brain, while obesity at midlife doubles the risk of dementia, a pair of studies concluded.

Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish have been shown to boost brain functioning as well as cutting the risk of stroke, and eating fish regularly appears to protect the brain as people age, the six-year study of Chicago residents found.

"The rate of (mental) decline was reduced by 10% to 13% a year among persons who consumed one or more fish meals a week compared with those with less than weekly consumption," wrote Martha Clare Morris of Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago.

Alzheimer's and other causes of dementia are growing problems around the world, particularly in developed countries with ageing populations.

In another study published in the same journal, Swedish researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm concluded that obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels at midlife each doubled the risk of dementia later in life.

Subjects who suffered from all three of the health problems at midlife multiplied their risk of dementia six times. - Reuters

Obesity poses larger diabetes risk than inactivity

An extract from the local newspaper (report from New York, U.S.A.)

Although obesity and lack of exercise both raise the risk of type 2 diabetes in woman, obesity appears to be the more important factor, researchers reported.
In their study, Dr. Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, and colleagues found the relative risk in obese women (30 Body Mass Index) who were active was 10.74, compared with 2.08 in women who had a healthy weight (25 BMI) but were inactive.
Although both obesity and inactivity were significant predictors of type 2 diabetes, the researchers found the association for waist circumference was substantially stronger than for physical inactivity.
The study said "the magnitude of risk contributed by obesity is much greater than that imparted by lack of physical activity," and therefore "weight loss and maintenance of healthy weight should be emphasised." - Reuters

Calcium helps keep cancer at bay - research

An extract from the local newspaper (report from New York, U.S.A.)

Treatment with calcium supplements for four years appears to provide protection against recurrent colorectal adenomas - the type of polyp that leads to cancer - for up to five years after the supplements are stopped, research shows.
Beyond that point, however, no apparent effect is seen.
Researcher Dr. John Baron, from Dartmouth Medical School, said experimental studies have suggested calcium may reduce the risk of colorectal adenomas (and colorectal cancer) by forming a complex with bile acids and preventing potential carcinogens from contact with the inner mucosal lining of the colon.
He added that there is also evidence that calcium may have a specific effect on blocking formation of colon cells.
The study, reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, analysed data on 597 subjects. - Reuters

Aloe Ferox recommend the following products containing calcium: Calci-Boost and BodyBasics. For colorectal problems we also recommend Adam with herbs which may be beneficial for the wellness of the prostate.
